The East Coast Outrigger Racing Association (ECORA) is excited to welcome Hōkūleʻa to our shores in 2016. Our member outrigger organizations and partners are planning a variety of events that will involve Hōkūleʻa. Many are listed on our calendar and we hope you take the opportunity to learn more about this Hawaiian treasure and the origins of our sport during its voyage on the Eastern Seaboard.

What is Hōkūleʻa?
The Polynesian Voyaging Society's voyaging canoes, Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia, are traveling over 60,000 nautical miles around the earth, bringing people around the world together to set a course for a sustainable future. They are sailing like their ancestors have for a thousand years—using wayfinding. On board, there is no compass, sextant, or cellphone, watch, or GPS for direction. In wayfinding, the sun, moon, and stars are a map that surrounds the navigators. When clouds and storms make it impossible to see that map, wave patterns, currents, and animal behavior give a navigator directional clues to find tiny islands in the vast ocean. Hōkūleʻa has sailed using wayfinding for 40 years, and her navigators find their destinations using nature as a guide.
Now Hōkūleʻa, her sister canoe Hikianalia, and their navigators are taking that knowledge to find a new destination—a healthy ocean and island earth.
Founded on a legacy of Pacific Ocean exploration, the Polynesian Voyaging Society seeks to perpetuate the art and science of traditional Polynesian voyaging and the spirit of exploration through experiential educational programs that inspire students and their communities to respect and care for themselves, each other, and their natural and cultural environments. Just as the Polynesian voyagers populated the Pacific Islands, most cultures around the earth expanded outward over the sea. We all share a voyage of discovery in our past, and now the Polynesian Voyaging Society is leading a voyage of hope to bring us all together.
