Lake Champlain, VT - July 27, 2002
The 2002 Lake Champlain Challenge featured a 14-mile long course around a buoy south of Sunset Island, with a 7-mile short course around a buoy in between. The race took place in moderately rough conditions, starting under overcast skies, and finishing in the sunshine. Temperatures were in the low 70's. Strong overnight winds had stirred up the Lake, and the swell was running 1 -3 feet. During the race, the wind blew an average of 16 with a peak gust of 19 from the south-southwest at the nearby Colchester Reef weather station. With waves on the beam and multidirectional chop in places, conditions were challenging. Several safety boats were present to monitor the race. One OC4 outrigger hulied, a racing kayak lost control on a surf and rolled, and a sea kayak flipped and self-rescued unassisted twice (and finished). Spirits were high after the race.
