The 2nd
Annual Sandy Hooker OC1 was held at Highlands, New Jersey this past
weekend. A fairly warm day greated racers as the morning fog lifted
and the breezes
picked up at the National Recreation Area - Sandy Hook Unit. Thank
goodness for the wind because it helped get rid of the vicious bugs
that were biting and sucking our blood like vampires before the race
started! A handful of novice paddlers raced the the short course (5
miles), starting
on
the
bayside of Sandy Hook,
heading south and making the turn at the
Highlands
bridge
and
back.
At the same time, 17 men
and 2 women
raced
the long course (10.2 miles), turning at Sea Bright bridge. The race
to the bridge was exciting and the wind and bumps plentiful. However,
wind is not always a good thing. The anticipated reversal of tides
and winds didn't pan out, and the way home became challenging for
even the most seasoned paddler as sea conditions quickly worsened.
Blasting wind and confusing chop made navigating difficult, but everyone made
it safely home (even Slicko**).
