Toronto, ONT - June 10, 2007
Wai Nui, Why Not? Outrigger Race Results from Saturday June 9th, 2007 - Racing 12 Miles on Lake Ontario from the mouth of the Credit River, Mississauga to the Oakville Harbour pier.
With 71 entrants, the growth of the Wai Nui Why Not race, the newly sanctioned (by ECORA, East Coast Outrigger Racing Association), held Saturday shows how the sport of outrigger canoe racing continues to grow. The race featured classes of outrigger, kayak, surfski and north canoe.
Wai Nui O Kanakā Outrigger Canoe Club had a terrific showing for their home regatta. Derek Schrotter took first place in the OC1 single outrigger canoe, edging out Larry Cain with a time of 1:19:39.
Nancy Botting and Patti Whitten won Women’s OC2 (two-person outrigger), and the Wai Nui Women 1, with Wendy Perkins captaining, won the Women’s OC race. Liz Loek won the Women’s OC1 single outrigger.
Brian Heath won fastest time overall and first in kayak, continuing his paddling dominance in which he has been multi-year champion of some of the world’s toughest races, including the Blackburn in New England.
Flat conditions and warm weather contributed to the fine day that started with a Native drumming and singing blessing of the boats and paddlers, by Anishnaabe Kwe & Kwewug. They are from the New Credit First Nation. They did a water song, said a prayer and once the race was underway, a traveling song.
Wai Nui Outrigger is inviting paddlers and those who would like to find out more about this exciting sport to check us out at our compound under the Rebecca St. Bridge in the Oakville Harbour, and in Lakefront Promenade Park in Mississauga.
With assistance from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Wai Nui Outrigger has developed coaching expertise that will benefit new paddlers and those seeking world-class racing opportunities. Once again this summer we have multiple training crew boats going out 7 times a week.
Outrigger, native to Polynesia, has been introduced to North America in the last 10 years, and has now gained good following in western Canada and on both coasts of the United States. Wai Nui O Kanakā Outrigger Canoe Club took second place in the East Coast Outrigger Racing Association (ECORA) 2006 Racing Season.
